In a rare achievement, a solo miner recently mined a Bitcoin block, successfully solving block 907,283 and earning the full 3.125 BTC block reward. This block, containing over 4,000 transactions and associated fees totaling around $3,436, was worth approximately $372,773 at the time. The mining was completed via the Solo CK pool.

Recent Successes in Solo Mining

Solo mining, the act of attempting to mine Bitcoin independently, has become increasingly difficult as network difficulty and hashrate have soared. Despite this, solo miners have occasionally managed to succeed against all odds. One such example occurred in February 2025, when a solo miner solved block 883,181, earning 3.125 BTC worth around $300,000 at the time.

Similarly, in March 2025, another solo miner mined block 887,212 and secured a reward of about 3.15 BTC, valued at $263,000. These successes highlight that, although rare, solo mining can still be a profitable venture.

However, these examples are the exception rather than the norm. The challenges of solo mining grow as the Bitcoin network’s hashrate surpasses 900 exahashes per second, making it increasingly difficult for individuals to compete with large mining pools. The network difficulty adjusts every two weeks to ensure a consistent block time of around 10 minutes, further compounding the challenge.

Despite the odds, these rare victories bring attention to the ongoing opportunities for individual miners. While the chances of success are slim, the allure of the potential reward continues to attract those willing to take the risk. Even with the high barrier to entry, some still find a way to overcome the odds and secure a block.

Mining Power and Its Role in Success

The success of solo miners, especially in recent months, is often influenced by factors like network conditions and timing, as well as the strategic use of rented hash power. In early June 2025, for instance, a solo miner successfully mined block 899,826 by temporarily increasing their computational power to 259 petahashes per second. This “take-a-shot” approach involves renting additional hash power to boost the miner’s chances of solving the block. The reward for this successful block was about 3.15 BTC, valued at over $330,000 at the time.

This temporary increase in computational power gives miners a better shot at solving a block, but doesn’t guarantee success. The randomness of mining and the massive competition from large pools make this strategy a high-risk endeavor. Yet, for some miners, it offers a chance to compete in an environment that seems increasingly dominated by industrial-scale operations.

Using rented hash power is not the only method that has led to successful solo mining. Some miners rely on precise timing, hoping to catch a window when the network’s difficulty and hashrate are temporarily lower. These opportunities, while rare, continue to provide hope for individuals looking to make a mark in the Bitcoin mining world.

Solo Mining in the Context of Pool Mining

Although solo mining remains a viable option for some, the vast majority of Bitcoin miners participate in mining pools. These pools combine computational power from multiple miners, increasing the chances of solving a block. In return, the block reward is divided among all participants based on their contribution to the pool’s hash power. This method provides more consistent payouts and helps mitigate the risk of long periods of inactivity, a common challenge faced by solo miners.

In contrast, solo miners bear the full brunt of the risks. The substantial investment in hardware and electricity costs can make solo mining a financially daunting endeavor. While the rewards can be lucrative, the chances of securing a block are slim, often resulting in long periods of downtime between successes.
