Vitalik Buterin has introduced a new mechanism called the Fast Confirmation Rule (FCR), aimed at reducing transaction confirmation times on Ethereum. The proposal allows transactions to receive a strong non-revert guarantee after just one slot, which is approximately 12 seconds.
This marks a shift from current practices, where users often wait several minutes before considering a transaction secure. The update focuses on improving how quickly users and platforms can rely on completed transactions.

From Minutes to Seconds
At present, deposits from Ethereum to exchanges or Layer 2 networks can take anywhere from two to thirteen minutes. During this period, funds remain temporarily unusable.
With the Fast Confirmation Rule, this delay could be reduced to around 13 seconds. This represents a reduction of up to 80–98%, depending on the use case. The change is expected to improve transaction flow and reduce waiting times across multiple platforms.

How It Actually Works
The Fast Confirmation Rule replaces the traditional “k-deep” confirmation model, where transactions are considered safe after a certain number of blocks.
Instead, the new approach relies on validator attestations. Validators confirm that they have observed and agreed on a block. If a sufficient number of attestations is reached within a short time, the block can be treated as confirmed much earlier. This method maintains strong security assumptions while enabling faster confirmation.
One of the key aspects of this update is that it does not require a hard fork. The mechanism can be integrated into Ethereum’s existing infrastructure.
It also reuses existing elements such as the “safe” block tag in JSON-RPC, allowing exchanges and infrastructure providers to adopt the change without major technical adjustments.

Part of a Broader Roadmap
This update aligns with Ethereum’s broader development plans. Vitalik Buterin has outlined a long-term roadmap that includes reducing slot times further, with a target of eventually reaching around two seconds.
Other planned improvements include enhancements to privacy and preparations for post-quantum security. The Fast Confirmation Rule represents one step toward improving speed and usability within the network.
