Vitalik Buterin Moves to Decentralized Social Media in 2026

Vitalik social media

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has announced he is fully transitioning to decentralized social media in 2026. In a post shared through Firefly, a multi-client platform that supports X, Lens, Farcaster, and Bluesky, he said that every post he has made or read this year has gone through decentralized tools.

Buterin criticized traditional platforms for promoting short-term engagement and failing to surface quality information or foster meaningful discussion. He stated that better mass communication tools are needed to serve users’ long-term interests and support healthier online interactions.

Firefly and the Shared Data Layer

Firefly, the tool Buterin now uses exclusively, connects several social platforms through a shared data layer. This allows users to post and read across multiple networks using a single interface. Buterin said this approach gives people more control and creates space for competition, since developers can build new clients without being locked into one platform.

He sees this open model as a way to move beyond what he described as a “single global info warzone,” where content is filtered through centralized algorithms.

Criticism of Token-Based Social Models

Buterin also addressed the failures of previous crypto-based social platforms, particularly those that introduced speculative tokens. He said these models often rewarded existing popularity instead of quality content, and that many of their associated tokens quickly lost value.

He contrasted this with models like Substack, where subscriptions are used to support creators directly, rather than relying on token speculation. He added that creating new assets doesn’t automatically lead to better outcomes, especially if platforms are not designed to help users make sense of the information they receive.

Looking Ahead

Buterin expressed support for the new teams managing decentralized platforms such as Lens and Farcaster, and said he plans to post more frequently on them in 2026. He encouraged broader participation in decentralized social ecosystems and called for more developers to focus on improving online communication tools.
